This portion details the last saga of Abraham’s life, as he settls his affairs and prepares to bury his beloved Sarah. Abraham purchases a cemetery area for Sarah in the opening sentence of this parashah. There is much maneuvering before the final price is agreed upon. Before he dies, Abraham must find a suitable wife for his Isaac, so he entrusts his devoted servant Eliezer, to travel over 500 miles back to the Euphrates river valley to find a future wife for his son. There Eliezer will find a brilliant young maiden from among Abraham’s kinfolk.
Everything works out! Eliezer is trustworthy, and laden with gifts and precious goodies, he finds a girl named Rebecca. She just happens to be the daughter of Abraham’s nephew. She is also willing to return with this servant to marry a son that she has never seen. So Eliezer returns to Canaan with Rebecca, hoping that the future meeting will go according to plan. So Isaac meets her, falls in love instantly, and is ‘comforted for the death of his mother Sarah.’ (Gen. 24:67)
